How to get more Google reviews

By the Revurank teamUpdated

Short answer

Ask every customer for a review the same day you finish the job, send a direct link that opens your Google review form in one tap, and follow up once a few days later. Reply to every review. Never offer rewards for reviews or only ask happy customers, because Google doesn’t allow it.

Why happy customers don’t leave reviews

Most satisfied customers never write a review, and it’s rarely because they didn’t like you. Usually one of three things happens: nobody asked, it was too much effort (searching for you on Google, finding the review button), or they meant to and forgot. Every step below removes one of those reasons.

A simple system that works

  1. Get your direct review link. It opens your Google review form in one tap, with no searching. Make one with the free review link generator.
  2. Ask in person at the end of the job. A quick “If you’re happy with everything, a Google review would really help us” sets up the message that follows.
  3. Send the link the same day. By text or email, while the experience is fresh. Keep it to one or two sentences with the link. Ready-made wording is in the review request templates.
  4. Follow up once or twice. A short reminder around day 3, and a last one around day 7, catches the people who forgot. Then stop.
  5. Make it physical. Put a QR code where customers wait or pay, on receipts and on invoices. Print one with the printable review sign maker.
  6. Reply to every review. Thank people by name and mention something specific. Customers who see replies are more likely to leave their own. The reply generator drafts one in seconds.
  7. Track your progress. Set a goal with the Google rating calculator and check monthly.

What to say when you ask

Short and personal beats long and polished. A message that works:

Text message“Hi Maria, thanks for choosing Bright Clean Co. today! If you have 30 seconds, a quick Google review would mean a lot to us: [link] Reply STOP to opt out.”

It uses their name, says thank you, sets an expectation of how long it takes, and has one link. Only text customers who agreed to hear from you, and include an opt-out line. That keeps you within TCPA rules in the US and CASL in Canada.

What Google doesn’t allow

Breaking these rules can get reviews removed or your profile restricted:

It’s fine to give unhappy customers an easy way to reach you privately, as long as the Google review link stays available to them too.

How many reviews do you need?

Enough to look active and to stand out next to the businesses that appear beside you on Google Maps. Recency matters: ten reviews from this month say more than a hundred from three years ago. A steady flow from asking every customer beats a one-off push.

Questions

What is the fastest way to get Google reviews?

Text your direct review link to every customer the same day you finish the job, then send one reminder about three days later. Same-day requests with a one-tap link get far more responses than asking days later or telling people to “find us on Google”.

Is it against Google’s rules to ask for reviews?

No. Google encourages businesses to ask. What breaks the rules is offering rewards for reviews, only asking customers you expect to be happy (review gating), writing fake reviews, or asking for a specific star rating.

How many Google reviews does a local business need?

There’s no fixed number, but you should aim to have more recent reviews than the businesses that show up next to you on Google Maps, and keep getting new ones every month. Use the Google rating calculator to see what it takes to reach a target rating.

Should I reply to positive reviews too?

Yes. A short, personal thank-you shows future customers that a real person reads them, and Google says replying to reviews shows customers you value their feedback.
